    Summer Berries for Winter Remedies

    The interplay between seasons allows us to embrace nature's cyclical gifts, and elderberries exemplify this harmony. Harvested in the sunlit days of summer, the tiny dark elderberries are not just a testament to the richness of nature but also a powerful ally in maintaining health during the colder months.


    The Immune-Boosting Properties of Elderberries

    Rich in antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins, they help combat oxidative stress and bolster the body’s defenses. Additionally, elderberries contain high levels of Vitamin C, a crucial nutrient that supports immune health and suppresses colds, coughs, flu, and any allergic reactions.


    Natural Support for Reducing Inflammation

    Inflammation plays a significant role when we are sick. Elderberries’ natural anti-inflammatory properties, derived from anthocyanins, quercetin, and rutin help soothe these symptoms. Quercetin, a potent bioflavonoid found in elderberries, stabilizes mast cells, preventing the release of histamines that trigger allergic reactions.


    This is why, I love making elderberry syrup from my backyard-grown elderberries, a classic and versatile option to ward off common illnesses during winter. Elderberry syrup can be taken by a spoonful or added to beverages. Whether homemade or store-bought, this preparation retains the berry’s potent properties.



    To prepare, boil elderberries in spring water, and add organic cinnamon, cloves, ginger, tulsi, amla, cardamom, mint, lemon, & saffron. Reduce the quantity to half. Strain the elderberries out and sweeten the syrup with honey. It can be easily frozen in ice cube trays for winter use. All you need to do is remove a cube from the freezer and add it to your hot herbal tea. Alternatively, warm it and have it as it is. I love using some in my hot herbal teas and concocting other delicious recipes like elderberry ice cream.
